README -- EDGAR v4.3 for GEOS-Chem (located in HEMCO/EDGARv43/v2016-11/) 18 Apr 2018 GEOS-Chem Support Team geos-chem-support@g.harvard.edu Original files =============================================================================== EDGAR v4.3.1 emissions of NOx, CO, SO2, NH3, OC, BC, PM2.5, PM10 and VOC from 1970-2010 were available on the EDGAR website: EDGAR v4.3 data (http://edgar.jrc.ec.europa.eu/overview.php?v=431) Generally, 3 types of files were available: 1. Annual total gridded emissions for each species (0.1x0.1), 1970-2010 2. 2010 gridded emissions for more specific sectors and each species (0.1x0.1). 3. Time series data of total emissions for each sector, each species and each country. Data processing =============================================================================== We generate gridded annual emissions for each species and each sector using the available information above. Country totals in the time series data were spatially distributed based on the 2010 gridded data for the corresponding species and sector. Comparison with the original annual total gridded data shows consistent global totals and high correlations (r > 0.6 before 1980, r > 0.8 before 1990, and r > 0.9 after 1990). We also calculate seasonal scale factors for each sector based on the 2010 data. An observation of the results indicates that ifferent species in the same sector show nearly identical seasonal variations over all grids, possibly due to consistent activity data used. Therefore we use the seasonal scale factors of CO in 2010 for most sectors, except for AGR, and SOL (see below on sector meanings), for which we use NH3 and NOx, respectively. Aviation and shipping emissions are not included, since it is hard to spatially assgin the total emissions of international aviation and shipping in the time series data. 12 sectors are finally available: POW: Power generation ENG: Energy industry, including Oil refineries, fuel exploitation (production/transmission), transformation industry, etc. IND: Manufacturing industry TRO: Road transport TNG: Railways, pipelines, off-road transport RCO: Energy for buidings (residential combustion) PPA: Process emissions during production and application AGR: Agriculture (excluding soil and agricultural burning) AWB: Agricultural waste burning SOL: Soil emissions SWD: Waste solid and wastewater FFF: Fossil Fuel Fires Note: 1. In HEMCO, the current "emission catogory" for all the sectors are 1/2 (fossil/biofuel). 2. the SOL sector for NOx and AWB sector for every species should be excluded from simulation. 3. The FFF sector corresponds to the IPCC sector 7A, including "underground coal fires and Kuwait oil fires". An observation of the emission map shows there are emissions for this sector only over the arid Northern China (Taklamakan and Gobi Desert) and several small grids over Middle East. We are not sure whether this sector should be excluded. Currently it is included in HEMCO, consistent with EDGAR v4.2. File names =============================================================================== 1. Annual emission files: EDGAR_v43.$SPECIES.$SECTOR.0.1x0.1.nc Resolution : 0.1 x 0.1 grid (3600 x 1800 boxes) Units : kg substance m-2 s-1 Timestamps : Yearly, 1970 thru 2010 Compression : Level 5 (nccopy -d5) Chunking : nccopy -c lon/3600,lat/1800,time/1 Note: The NOx emissions are expressed as equivalent NO2 so needs to use scale factor (ID 115) to convert to NO in HEMCO 2. Seasonal scale factors: EDGAR_v43.Seasonal.1x1.nc Resolution : 1 x 1 grid (360 x 180 boxes) Units : unitless Timestamps : 2010, January-December Compression : Level 5 (nccopy -d5) Chunking : nccopy -c lon/3600,lat/1800,time/1 Note: Although the 2010 gridded data are in 0.1x0.1 resolution, we prepare this scale factor in coarser resolution. Since GEOS-Chem always regrids scale factors before applying them to emission data, using fine resolution scale factors in coarse resolution simulations could introduce large errors.
