README -- describes contents of GEOS_4x5/CO2_201003/fossilfuel_andres/ 25 Feb 2011 Bob Yantosca geos-chem-support@g.harvard.edu Data directories and files: =============================================================================== annual_v2010/ : Contains the CDIAC CO2 emissions from R. Andres, version monthly_v2010/ : 2010. The files are split into two subdirectories, one for annual CO2 emissions, and one for monthly CO2 emissions: (1) annual_v2010/ff.YYYY.geos.4x5 (2) monthly_v2010/ff.YYYYMM.geos.4x5 Where YYYY = 1979..2009 and MM = 01..12 The data is placed on the GEOS 4 x 5 grid (i.e. half-sized polar boxes, 1st box centered on -180 longitude). The data files are in binary punch format. The CO2 emissions have units of [molec/cm2/s]. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% %%% NOTE: This is the data that you should use %%% %%% in your GEOS-Chem CO2 simulations. You %%% %%% will need to use GEOS-Chem v9-01-01 with %%% %%% the patch named "v9-01-01-Patch-CO2". %%% %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% annual/ : Contains the CDIAC CO2 emissions from R. Andres, version 2010. Only the annual CO2 emisisons files are present: (1) annual/ff.YYYY.geos.4x5 Where YYYY = 1985..2006 The data is placed on the GEOS 4 x 5 grid (i.e. half-sized polar boxes, 1st box centered on -180 longitude). The data files are in binary punch format. The CO2 emissions have units of [molec/cm2/s]. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% %%% NOTE: These data have been superseded by %%% %%% the data in annual_v2010. You should only %%% %%% use this data for backwards compatibility %%% %%% with older GEOS-Chem simulations. %%% %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Original README from Ray Nassar follows here: =============================================================================== README file for CDIAC monthly fossil fuel CO2 emissions in GEOS-Chem -- The Carbon Dioxide Information Analysis Center (CDIAC) fossil fuel (and cement manufacture) CO2 emission inventory is available courtesy of Robert J. Andres (CDIAC). These inventory files can be used in the GEOS-Chem CO2 simulation in v8-03-02 or later with no modifications to the code if the files are saved to the appropriate directory below: /data/ctm/GEOS_2x2.5/CO2_201003/fossil_andres/annual /data/ctm/GEOS_2x2.5/CO2_201003/fossil_andres/monthly /data/ctm/GEOS_4x5/CO2_201003/fossil_andres/annual /data/ctm/GEOS_4x5/CO2_201003/fossil_andres/monthly Inventory bpch files are available spanning 1979-2007 using the CDIAC (version 2010) values regridded from the1 degree by 1 degree inventory (native resolution available on special request). 2008-2009 files are available based on scaling the 2007 inventory values with publicly available 2008 and 2009 preliminary fossil fuel consumption statistics from the energy company BP. The scaled values in this release are more reliable than the scaled annual values (for 2007-2009) in the v8-03-02 release (described in Nassar et al. 2010), which we no longer recommend using. Since the CDIAC inventory is updated each year (for all years in the inventory), users may want to rename their inventory directories with version numbers (and change the code appropriately) rather than overwriting files, for example: /data/ctm/GEOS_2x2.5/CO2_201003/fossil_andres/monthly_v2010 Lastly, when using the inventory in GEOS-Chem, please remember to cite the following papers and consult them for further details: * Andres, R.
