README -- describes contents of HEMCO/LIGHTNOX/v2014-07 directory 09 Mar 2015 GEOS-Chem Support Team geos-chem-support@g.harvard.edu Overview: =============================================================================== This directory contains lightning CDF tables from Ott et al [JGR, 2010]. History: =============================================================================== In GEOS-Chem v9-01-01, the following updates were made that impact the emissions of lightning NOx: (1) Bug fix for incorrect cloud-top-height determination (2) Addition of updated vertical release profiles (cf. Ott et al 2010) (3) Removal of obsolete options from the source code (lightning_nox_mod.f) For detailed information about these updates, please see the document prepared by Lee Murray (ltmurray@seas.harvard.edu): L.T. Murray, Changes affecting lightning NOx emissions in GEOS-Chem v9-01-01, January 2011, (ltmurray@post.harvard.edu) http://acmg.seas.harvard.edu/geos/wiki_docs/emissions/LNOx-v9-01-01.Release.Notes.pdf Please also see this wiki post about GEOS-5.2.0 and OTD/LIS redistribution: http://wiki.seas.harvard.edu/geos-chem/index.php/Lightning_NOx_emissions#BETA_values_for_North_America_for_years_after_2008 Addendum (24 Apr 2014): ------------------------ NOTE: We have added the files OTD-LIS-Local-Redist.CTH.v5.geosfp.2x25.v20140401 OTD-LIS-Local-Redist.CTH.v5.geosfp.4x5.v20140401 which contain OTD/LIS data based on GEOS-FP 4x5 met from Oct-Dec 2013. This will allow 1-year benchmark simulations for 2013 to finish normally without encountering the error trap. Original message from Lee Murray: I recently updated the files for another user who provided me the unconstrained lightning flashes. Swap out lightning_nox_mod.F with the attached one, and drop the bpch files in the lightning_NOx_201311 data directories. You should see about 6 Tg N a-1 globally. (Bob, I'm waiting for a user to provide me with the unconstrained nested flash rates for Oct-Dec 2013, before I push the update for the standard code, to reduce the number of data directory updates, unless enough users start requesting the global files). Lee Addendum (16 Jan 2015): ------------------------ NOTE: We have added the files OTD-LIS-Local-Redist.CTH.v5.geosfp.025x03125.NA.v20141210.nc OTD-LIS-Local-Redist.CTH.v5.geosfp.2x25.v20141210.nc OTD-LIS-Local-Redist.CTH.v5.geosfp.4x5.v20141210 which contain OTD/LIS data based on GEOS-FP met from Apr 2012 - Oct 2014. We have also added the file OTD-LIS-Local-Redist.CTH.v5.geosfp.025x03125.CH.v20141210.nc which contains OTD/LIS data for the nested CH grid based on GEOS-FP met from Jan 2013 - Dec 2013. Addendum (03 Aug 2015): ------------------------ The geos5.1.0 and geos5.2.0 files have now been replaced by a single geos5 file. Original message from Christoph Keller: The problem with the monthly GEOS-5 redistribution factors is that they change from version 5.1.0 to 5.2.0, with the switch occurring on September 2008. My solution to this problem was to create one single file that covers years 2007 to 2009. The monthly data of 2007 is then the full year of 5.1.0 data, and year 2009 covers the entire 5.2.0 data. Year 2008 is a hybrid with 5.1.0 data from Jan Aug and 5.2.0 fields afterwards. HEMCO will then automatically pick the correct scale factors depending on the current simulation year! Addendum (01 Mar 2016) ------------------------ NOTE: We have added the files OTD-LIS-Local-Redist.CTH.v5.merra2.05x0625.CH.v20160301.nc OTD-LIS-Local-Redist.CTH.v5.merra2.05x0625.NA.v20160301.nc OTD-LIS-Local-Redist.CTH.v5.merra2.4x5.v20160301.nc which contain OTD/LIS data based on MERRA-2 met from Jan 2009 - Dec 2014. Addendum (19 Jul 2016) ------------------------ NOTE: We have added the file OTD-LIS-Local-Redist.CTH.v5.merra2.2x5.CH.v20160719.nc which contain OTD/LIS data based on MERRA-2 met from Jan 2009 - Dec 2014.
